“They were very excited (about the Jacksonville win) but knowing that they had to play Pleasant Valley next, they were geared up to beat (the Raiders),” Strott said.
“I think Pleasant Valley was just better at that moment in time,” said Strott, calling all three teams evenly matched.
For the day, Breanna Thompson and Kayla Allen each had eight kills. Allen added 12 digs and three aces and Thompson had three digs. Setter Hilarie Hincy had 31 assists and 11 digs. Libero Catie Hightower had 31 digs. Brea Dixon had 18 digs. Kelly Martin finished with 15 digs, two kills and two aces.
Last Thursday, Piedmont opened its area schedule at home against Weaver and won 25-12, 25-16, 25-17.
“I got to play a lot of the girls against Weaver which helped us out,” Strott said.
Thompson and Dixon had six kills each against the Bearcats. Dixon added nine digs. Sarah Garner had four kills and Tori Woodruff three kills. Hincy added 12 assists and Tracy Freeman had seven assists. Hightower recorded 15 digs.
Piedmont began the current week with its second area win Monday. This time, the Saks Wildcats fell 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15. Garner topped the attack with 11 kills. Allen and Thompson had eight kills apiece. Hincy finished with 32 assists. Hightower led on defense with 32 digs. Hincy added 15 digs, Dixon 12 digs and Allen 10 digs.
Strott said the mental toughness exhibited by Hincy, Martin and Garner helped carry Piedmont past Saks, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A in the most recent volleyball poll. The remainder of this week won’t get any easier for the Bulldogs. Piedmont was to play at Class 4A No. 6 Alexandria Tuesday. On Thursday, the Bulldogs go to 2A No. 10 Geraldine for a tri-match that includes Holly Pond.
Piedmont travels to Daphne for a tournament hosted by perennial state champion Bayside Academy Saturday.
“When we go to Bayside, we’re in the pool with Bayside (No. 1 in 3A), Montgomery Academy (No. 3 in 3A) and (Class 6A) Fairhope,” Strott said. “I want my girls to get quicker and get more mentally tough.”
