Hokes Bluff may have been happy to postpone the outcome of its match-up with the mighty Piedmont Bulldogs, but the fast-moving storm that sent Friday’s game into Saturday also knocked a portion of downtown into a blackout for several hours Friday evening.

Piedmont Power and Light supervisor Phillip Johnson said his department received its first reports of power outages around 6 p.m. Friday evening, and the main primary power circuits were restored by 9 p.m.

The largest cause of the outage, Johnson said, was due to a large limb taking down power lines on Wolf Ave. In addition, a large pine tree on Merrimack Drive fell, taking out power lines, and the top of a large oak tree behind First Baptist Church on East Ladiga fell, taking out two power poles and four spans of primary power lines, said Johnson.

The department was still receiving calls on Sunday because of continued falling limbs taking out residential services. Johnson said the calls were handled immediately and power was restored.

“I would also like to stress to the customers of our power system,” said Johnson. “when you see power lines down please consider them to be active. Keep your children and your pets away until the downed lines have been taken care of.”
