Last week’s Piedmont City Council meeting included some business but the highlight of the night was the recognition of 16 students who reside in the Piedmont Housing Authority by Mayor Brian Young.

Keith Word, Executive Director of the Piedmont Housing Authority introduced 10 students who were recognized for making the honor roll for the entire school year for 2009-10 at Piedmont City Schools.

The students were taken to the Piedmont City Council meeting by Word in a limousine compliments of Folsom’s Funeral Home’s Memory Chapel and Heritage Chapel. Each student received $ 25 in Piedmont McDonalds gift coupons compliments of the Piedmont Housing Authority Mayor Young placed a medallion around the neck of each student that had their name engraved on the back with A-Team 2010. The students were then taken to the Piedmont McDonalds where they were treated to ice cream, milk shakes, or sundaes.

One student, Jonathan Wayman, was recognized for making the honor roll for four years in a row with a five-foot tall trophy.

Word also advised the Housing Authority families, children, and youth would be treated to a end of summer pool party on Sunday, August 8th, 2010 from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the Clyde H. Pike Civic Center with Life Guards, pizza, soft drinks, and music provided by Keith Word who also is a Disc Jockey when not at work at the Piedmont Housing Authority.

I can only slightly understand the complaints towards Keith Word's efforts to treat these youngsters from the Housing Authority. It may seem a little unfair to some of you, but give him credit for helping these children gain some self-esteem and confidence in themselves. He cannot pick out all the children in Piedmont. He is only trying to help those of whom he is in close contact. Keith is a wonderful fellow and does a great service to Piedmont.

Bitter much? These children are being recognized by the housing authority. I believe hard work should be acknowleged. So sorry you don't have someone like Keith Word to publicly show support of your child.

I'm always reading these articles about how Mayor Young and Piedmont City Council always bragg on the kids from the housing authority. They are always receiving this and that.... WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER CHILDREN HERE IN PIEDMONT???? DO YOU HAVE TO LIVE IN THE PROJECTS FOR YOUR CHILD TO GET RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR HARD WORK? WHAT DO YOU TELL A CHILD WHEN THEY ASK WHY THEIR FRIENDS RODE IN A LIMO FOR HONOR ROLL AND THEY DIDN'T? KIDS DO TALK AND BRAG!!!

Have you, or someone you know, received help from the Piedmont Benevolence Center in the past year?
