The signed agreement has been sent to Gov. Bob Riley for approval, but he is currently out of the country and that will delay the final approval.
“Hopefully we’ll proceed along and those jobs will start coming in soon,” said Young.
The council passed a motion giving Young the authority to begin paperwork towards the purchase of two pieces of property for the new community center complex. The Morgan property, located at the intersection of Alabama Highway 200 and Piedmont Cutoff Road, is currently priced at $180,000, said Young, and the second piece of property, adjacent to the sports complex, owned by Thomas Probst, could cost the city $230,000.
The council tabled discussion on the acceptance of current bids on a water well located at the high school. Utility manager Lee Young said that it might be possible for the city to receive lower bids on the digging of the well because drillers now have better information as to the geological structure and depth needed to locate the water at the site.
Police Chief Steven Tidwell announced that his department has received an additional $1,500 traffic overtime grant, bringing the yearly traffic overtime grant total for the department to almost $8,000. An additional $24,000 technology grant through ADECA was awarded to the department for the purchase of a fingerprint scanner.
Piedmont Housing Authority Director Keith Word handed out awards to his A team at the council meeting. The A team consists of children from the housing authority who have maintained all A, or all A and B honor roll grades throughout the school year. Each student received a $25 McDonald’s gift certificate and a medal, and were treated to a limousine ride to McDonald’s after the City Council meeting.
In other buisness; the council paid bills in total of $510,201.91.
