The Jacksonville News and The Piedmont Journal walked away with seven awards in this year’s Alabama Press Association’s contests for news and advertising.

In the Better Newspaper Contest, The magazine honoring the Piedmont Bulldogs’ state football championship (When the Stars Go Blue) took first place for Best Niche Publication. Ken Grissom’s photo from the state championship game took third place for Best Sports Photo.

In Jacksonville, the headline “JHS 2 txt info 2 u” took second place for Best Headline and Lori Tippet’s story on the death of Red Wilder called “Mr. Tennis” took third place for Best Sports Feature Story.

On the advertising side, the Rib House ad that ran in both Piedmont and Jacksonville designed by Hannah Crisp took first place for Best Single Ad ½ Page and Under (black and white).

The Piedmont Journal also took second place for “Congratulations, Class of 2009!” in the best Signature Page category. The page was designed by Crisp and Andrea Howard.

The football magazine that honored the state champion Bulldogs also won in advertising, taking third place for Best Niche Publication.

“These award certainly are well deserved by our staffs in Jacksonville and Piedmont,” said John Alred, who is publisher for both newspapers.

“Of course, I always think we should win every award because I think we do a great job at both newspapers. We will continue to strive for excellence and present the best products we can for both communities.”
