A power outage will take effect for parts of Piedmont on May 9th, according to Phillip Johnson, supervisor of the Power and Light Department. During Tuesday night’s city council meeting Johnson stated that his department will be performing maintenance on sub-station No. 3 located next to Jack’s Restaurant, and that the work will cause a power interruption for 65 percent of the power grid for 20 minutes. Johnson said the interruption is set for some time between 1 a.m. and 3 p.m on May 9th.

Mayor Brian Young announced that the city has organized a skateboard committee to look into the possibility of developing an area for a skateboard park. Carl Henton, Jeff Formby, Yancee Cantrell, Ben Singleton and Ed Hanson have agreed to sit on the committee.

“They’re going to try and find an area,” Young said. The committee is currently looking at a parcel of city-owned land across from the Charter Cable office downtown, Young said.

Several residents came to the meeting concerned over the motion passed during the last council meeting allowing the removal of three trees in front of the home of Bernice Green at 404 South Main Street. Green had asked the council to have the trees removed because the roots have broken up the sidewalk and she says she is unable to get her wheelchair bound husband out of the house and down the street into town.

Bedford Carter spoke to the council, asking them to find some other way to fix Green’s sidewalk without removing the trees.

“There’s umpteen different ways to fix it,” said Carter. After hearing from Carter the council passed a motion made by councilman Ed Hanson to take the issue of the tree removal under advisement.

“If we can work around the tree without cutting that tree it’s going to save the taxpayers and everybody, and people like Mrs. Green will be happy about it because you can get down the sidewalk,” said Hanson.

In other business the council paid bills in total of $112, 853.27.

The council passed a resolution allowing Arista Billing to provide a new one-sheet utility bill for Piedmont residents. The new one-sheet bill will likely be mailed to customers beginning in July, said Utility Manager Lee Young. The new bill will contain graphs that will allow customers to see their usage for the last three months.
