Piedmont School Superintendent Matt Akin says a road trip may be in the works for the Piedmont Bulldogs’ football team this coming season.

Gulf Shores High School, a 5A school, has asked to play the Bulldogs and is willing to foot at least a portion of the bill to get them there. If things go as planned, the Blue Knights band and the cheerleaders will be attending the game along with the football team.

The board approved a recommendation that has rescheduled the school’s fall break from Oct. 11-15 to Oct. 4-8 so that the game can be played during the break without interrupting classroom instruction.

“They want us to come because we’re the 3A State Champions so it would be a big draw for them, but the only way we could do it is if fall break was the previous week,” said Akin.

Coach Steve Smith has been in talks with Gulf Shores High School and is working to ensure the school will take care of some of the travel and room expenses for the October trip.

“It would be a pretty neat opportunity for our kids and for our student body,” said Akin. The game is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 7.

During the last board meeting, Akin said he was concerned that the education budget could see a proration increase in the coming year.

“We’re holding on right now,” said Akin. “What concerns me is there’s not enough revenue and they’re (Alabama legislators) not willing to do what it takes.”

He said that while the teachers’ pay has been taken care of in the upcoming budget, other operating expenses such as janitorial services and utility payments and non-certified employees were not addressed.

“They’re taking care of certified teachers and they’re cutting everything else,” said Akin.

Akin said he is working on a plan that would allow the school system to weather the possible budget shortfalls without laying off employees.
