Piedmont Elementary School recently participated in Run for Arthritis. The yearly event sponsored by the Alabama Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation is meant to heighten awareness that thousands of children in our state are affected by the disease.

The children experienced hands-on activities to learn how arthritis affects the body. They also raised money for their run, collecting over $1,800, which will go to help children affected by arthritis, some of which attend Piedmont Elementary School.

Arthritis is the number 1 cause of disability in the United States and affects one in every three people. Included in that number are 300,000 children affected by juvenile arthritis.

In Alabama, 33 percent of adults are diagnosed with arthritis, ranking Alabama as the second worst state in the nation for arthritis prevalence.
