Family continues to look for answers

The recent discovery of the body of a missing Jacksonville resident, Melody Evans, in a creek in the Peek Hill Community has awakened some to the plight of another missing woman. The family of Carla Cook Fuqua says they have not seen her since Oct. 29 of last year, and they are looking for answers.

Carla’s mother, Darlene Cook, says that the discovery of the body of Melody Evans was difficult to hear. “It’s really been an emotional week for me,” said Cook.

Carla’s aunt, Phyllis Cook, says that no matter what people are saying about Carla, she deserves to be found.

“She was going through the drug court. Her dad died, her husband got killed, and she had gotten on meth,” said Phyllis.

Carla was nearing the completion of her mandated drug court when she went missing last October.

“She was on level four of the drug court, and doing great,” said Phyllis. Since then, there have been no verifiable sightings of Carla and Piedmont police say they have conducted more than 70 interviews with assistance from over a dozen other state and federal agencies, searched 20 locations and assisted in giving polygraph examinations but have not been able to locate the missing 28-year-old mother.

Texas Equusearch has been given permission from the Piedmont Police Department to begin a search. As of Monday the search and rescue organization has not contacted the Piedmont Police to say when or where its search will begin. The non-profit search and rescue group has taken part in several high-profile cases including the search for the Mountain Brook resident Natalie Holloway.

Carla’s drivers license was discovered on Greenwood Road in Piedmont last week by an employee with the county highway department. Piedmont Police investigator Sergeant Carolyn Durham says that the discovery of the license leaves much to consider.

“We have not been able to make any conclusions regarding how the license got there, or how long it could have been there,” said Durham, who added that as time goes on the department continues to speak with more people and perform an increasing number of searches in the hunt for Carla.

Carla’s car was found not long after her disappearance, says Carla’s mother Darlene, in the possession of a friend. The vehicle was later returned to Darlene. And although her mother has stated she suspects Carla has returned to her Piedmont home, Darlene says that she, nor any other family member has actually seen Carla since that day in October.

There has been much speculation as to what could have happened to Carla. Some have said she ran to avoid jail-time. Carla is currently listed on the Cherokee County Sheriff’s website for a felony (Failure to appear on unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance) and for a misdemeanor charge of failure to pay on negotiating a worthless negotiable instrument, but Carla’s aunt Phyllis says that both charges came after she went missing. The Journal has been able to verify that the warrants were served after Carla disappeared.

Phyllis Cook fears the worst for Carla. She said that if and when Texas Equusearch begins its search in the heavily wooded areas of Piedmont, they’ll find what they’re looking for but it may be too late.

“It’s with all my gut feelings that they’re going to find her dead,” she said.

Piedmont Police say they conducted a search of the wooded area that Carla was believed to have been last seen near, but found only animal carcasses. The police say they have conducted interviews with the person who allegedly dropped Carla off, but cannot discuss the details while the investigation remains open. The department says they will continue to follow leads and conduct interviews until Carla is found.

Anyone with information at to the whereabouts of Carla Cook Fuqua is asked to contact the Piedmont Police at 256-447-9091 or at crimetips@piedmontcity.org or the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office at 256-927-3365.

Just would like to state first and for most... I am praying everyday for a safe return of Carla. I want nothing more than for her to be found. And the family and friends find peace at last. My heart goes out to you. But also, on another note would like to state that Carla's "Aunt Phyllis" is nothing more than a selfish, self-centered person looking for attention and hopefully on this matter, has good intentions but that is seriously doubtful. It seems anything that can bring attention to her "spotlight" is the subject of her concern. She is right about one thing though...the most important thing "IS" Carla. There should be no reason to aggitate or annoy the people who have the most impact of helping to find Carla. Why should you have to make appologies to these people for causing conflict, when they are such an important part of the mission to find Carla? So with this being said, I would like to thank anyone who has directed their time and concern in helping to find peace for this family. Hopefully, even the people that is stating Carla is the most important concern will finally step out of the spotlight and let the law enforcement in Piedmont do there jobs. For some reason everyone wants to belittle Carla for making bad life choices and that doesn't matter, who cares? Everyone makes mistakes, she deserves to be found at whatever costs and her family deserves peace of mind. You are in my prayers...

Carla,

Where Ever you may be all you have to do is call and we will come and get you, no matter what we have to do to get you !! My prayers Everyday and Night are that you are still alive out there somewhere. I don't know what to do anymore, my life is total turmoil not knowing where you are and if you are ok. You have been gone 5 months and not even spoken 1 word to me or Justin and how are we suppose to believe that you are still out there somewhere and just running from reality. Baby,Reality is hard for me but, I have to live it day by day and I do the best I can and I can promise you this that is not saying a whole lot!! I don't know what to do anymore other than take Justin to school and come home and go back to bed and try not to think about life. Go get Justin from school, and try to act like everything will be ok one day. Then the next day it will be the same thing unless it is just one of those days I can't do anything but CRY all day not knowing what the next day will bring!! Or when I am gonna get that phone call that I don't want to get and Pray that I don't get !! Or a Police Officer of some sort come to me and tell me Darlene we found her but we were to late! Carla, I don't know if I could keep my sanity for a minute and I have to for Justin!! He is what is keeping me going and that is only by the Grace of God!! Love you Baby and Hope to hear from you soon and hope to see you sooner than soon. Your Loving Mother, Darlene (Mother)

I am sorry about your daughter's dissapearance and the great deal of heartache you and your family must be going through. I do have a question for you, however. Pardon my ignorance, but can't family and friends (the general public) organize their own searches for missing individuals? I was not aware that you had to wait on law enforcement to act or that you couldn't act in conjunction with them.

I hope your daughter is returned to you safely.

Good Morning everyone! It is a beautiful day and going 6 months and we are no closer to finding Carla than we were 5 months ago. Has anyone heard any thing about the polygraph test, who has been questioned and what they have said, where the case is at this time other than still looking, has TES been contacted by Piedmont Police recently, are any more searches planned by anyone else other than TES soon? Just a few questions that need an answer one way or the other. I've noticed no one post on blog anymore. We can't just give up and assume that someone else will do this for us, we have to do something to find her ourselves. We have to call, hunt, and take the effort every day to do something to find Carla. So cheer up and make this week a less hunt Carla week. Love all of you and just need to find Carla. Call me if you need me to do something else to help.

Have you, or someone you know, received help from the Piedmont Benevolence Center in the past year?
