Panthers fall to tourney champs

In the often-delayed Cherokee County baseball tournament, Spring Garden fell to host school Cedar Bluff 5-4 Thursday. After an off day Friday, the Panther defeated Gaylesville 16-4 and lost to tournament champion Cherokee County 14-4 Saturday.

Against Cedar Bluff, Tyler Smart had a solo home run in the seventh. Smart also drove in Spring Garden’s first run with a ground out in the top of the first inning. Jake Scott and Andrew Maddox had the Panthers’ other RBIs. Scott, Trey Littlefield, Cory Anderson and Smart scored for Spring Garden. Pitcher Ryan Messer struck out six and walked three.

Saturday, Spring Garden opened against Gaylesville and won in five innings. Maddox pitched the first four innings and Will Penton followed Maddox.

Littlefield and Messer each had a home run. Messer ended with two hits and four RBIs. Littlefield was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Smart was 3-for-3. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Anderson and T.J. Brittain each had two hits. Scott, Maddox and Reece Johnson added hits for Spring Garden.

In the loss to Cherokee County, Penton led Spring Garden with three hits. Scott and Maddox each had two hits. Anderson, Smart and Messer added one hit apiece.
