The Spring Garden Panthers opened the Class 1A, Area 12 tournament at Cedar Bluff Tuesday night as the No. 3 seed and played No. 6 Gaylesville.

The result of that game was not available at the Journal’s press time but a win by Spring Garden would advance the Panthers to the semifinal round and a game against No. 2 Gaston at 7 p.m. Friday.

Losses to White Plains, Pleasant Valley and Bowdon, Georgia, ended the regular season for Spring Garden last week. Saturday, at Bowdon, the Panthers fell 69-47.

Bowdon led 38-15 at halftime and Panthers coach Ricky Austin told his players to start over and work to perfect some things that could help in the postseason. The Panthers out-pointed the Red Devils 32-31 in the final two quarters.

“We had some really nice plays in the second half,” Austin said.

Andrew Maddox led Spring Garden with 16 points, all in the second half. Casey Steward scored 12 points, Kaleb Morris seven points and Jake Scott five points.

In Spring Garden’s regular season home finale Friday, Pleasant Valley downed the Panthers 49-40.

“We handled their press pretty well, cut down on their quick points,” Austin said.

Morris scored all eight of his points in the first quarter and the Raiders led only 19-16 when the first quarter ended. A 3-point basket by Maddox was Spring Garden’s only scoring in the second quarter and Pleasant Valley upped its advantage to 29-19 at halftime. Cory Anderson had 12 points to lead the Panthers. Scott added 11 points.

At Spring Garden last Tuesday, the final was White Plains 40, Spring Garden 25.

“We controlled their press petty well. We were patient and took good shots, just didn’t hit many of them,” Austin said.

White Plains led 8-2 after one quarter, 23-17 at the half and 32-23 after three quarters.

Austin said the Panthers trailed by only six points around the four-minute mark and had a chance to capture a win.

“We didn’t act like, ’Hey, we’ve got a chance to upset somebody here.’ We just kind of sat back,” Austin said.

Anderson’s 12 points were best for Spring Garden. Scott scored seven points. Steward had three points and six rebounds.
