Charles "Charlie" R. LawlerCharles R. "Charlie" Lawler, 80, died Thursday evening, Dec. 17, 2009, at his residence. Mr. Lawler was born on Feb. 7, 1929, the son of the late Willie Robert and Cora Lee Taliferio Lawler. Mr. Lawler proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Congregational Methodist Church. He was very active and served as church leader for over 20 years and also as Dean Emeritus. He was very active in Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent. He loved fishing and was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Charles Lawler in 1979; two sisters, Mildred Holmes and Bernice Smith; four brothers, Austin, R.C., Harold and Bobby Lawler, also by his mother and father-in-law, Clifford and Lenora Thacker.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Betty T. Lawler; two sons, Clifford and Scott Lawler; four grandsons, Shane (Nicki) Lawler and Brandon (Jennifer) Lawler, Zach Hughes, Matthew Lawler; one great-grandson, Gavin Robert Lawler; one brother-in-law, Brent Thacker. A number of nephews and nieces also survive.
Funeral service for Mr. Lawler was conducted on Sunday Dec. 20, 2009, at 2 p.m. from the Memory Chapel of Folsom Funeral Home with the Rev. Jay Daughtery officiating. Internment followed in the Piedmont Memory Gardens. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers, LaFayne Lawler, Dwight Lawler, Douglas Knight, John Cantrell, James Bennett and Lester Ray. Hugh "Scottie" KirkpatrickHugh "Scottie" Kirkpatrick, 78, of Weaver, died Wednesday Dec. 16, 2009 in the Nolan Center of Anniston Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was born on October 17, 1930 the son of the late Nina Street Kirkpatrick and James Lawrence Kirkpatrick, Sr. Prior to his retirement, Scottie was employed at the Boozer Drug Store of Jacksonville for over 30 years. He was a graduate of Piedmont High School Class of 1949 and was named "All County Football and Basketball Player". He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Audrey Grimes Kirkpatrick, one brother Jack Kirkpatrick, and two sisters; Helen Duvall and Drucilla Pennewell. Scottie was a wonderful man who enjoyed making people laugh and enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed crocheting and was a member of the Weaver Church of Christ. He was a favorite to many students and faculty members and citizens of the Jacksonville community.
Survivors include son: Danny S. Kirkpatrick of Birmingham; daughter and son-in-law, Regina K. and Allen W. Jones of DeArmanville; brothers, James Lawrence Kirkpatrick, Jr., John Roy Kirkpatrick, Dennis Kirkpatrick; sister, Linda Fagan; grandchildren, Tyler Jones, Brian, Bradley, and Julie Kirkpatrick; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Kirkpatrick was conducted on Saturday Dec. 19, 2009, at 2 p.m. from the Memory Chapel of Folsom Funeral Home with Minister Clyde Ray officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Memory Gardens. Grandsons and nephews served as active pallbearers.

Yvonne RogersFuneral service for Yvonne Rogers, 74, of Spring Garden was Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory with Mr. Norman Flynn and Mr. Steven Hall officiating. Burial followed at Carmel Cemetery. Mrs. Rogers died Wednesday, Dec.16, 2009 at her home.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Max D. Rogers; two children, Alex Rogers of Piedmont and Pam Pope (Danny) of Spring Garden; three grandchildren, Valerie Bollinger (Josh) of Alexandria, Lindsey Silvey (Jason) of Southside and Colton McCrelles of Spring Garden; three great grandchildren, Taylor Bollinger, Laura Claire Bollinger and Seth Bollinger; two brothers, Don Clark (Betty) of Valley and Nick Clark and (Willie) of New Orleans, Louisiana; sister-in-law, Carolyn Clark of Wadley; brother-in-law, Grady Mann of Valley; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were David Rogers, Stanley Rogers, John Rogers, Boyd Rogers, Brad Bowdoin and Colton McCrelles.
Mrs. Rogers had been a Piedmont area resident since 1972 and was a member of the Highway 9 Church of Christ.
John Lester ScoginJohn Lester Scogin, 56, of Piedmont died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center. Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Scogin is survived by two children, Jason Scogin (Valarie) and Jennifer Butler (Sammy) all of Piedmont; three grandchildren, Timmi Scogin, Justin Butler and Zack Scogin; and several cousins.
Mr. Scogin was a Piedmont resident most of his life and was empolyed at Bostrom for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Zack and Margaret Scogin.
Lois Avanda TaylorLois Avanda Taylor, 89, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at the Cherokee Healthcare. Mrs. Taylor was born on Dec. 21, 1919, the daughter of the late Robert and Maude Smart Westbrook. Mrs. Taylor was a member of the First Baptist Church of Piedmont and attended Noah's Baptist Church in Centre. She was a very well known artist and created many greeting cards that were published. She was the owner and operator of Lois's Beauty Shop in Piedmont for over 30 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was a well respected artist and musician. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Taylor.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and David Steinbock, of Raleigh N.C.; one grandson, "Tripp" (Wendi) Steinbock III; a special niece, Sandy Fortner, of Atlanta, Ga., a special friend, Muffin Caldwell, of Centre. Several nephews and nieces also survive.
Funeral service for Mrs. Taylor was conducted on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at 3:30 p.m. from the Memory Chapel of Folsom Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff McCleary and Mr. Lane Weatherby officiating. Internment will follow in the Piedmont Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends this afternoon from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted. Ruth M. Ooten WordRuth M. Ooten Word, 75, went to be with Jesus on Dec. 15, 2009, at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Word of Piedmont; two daughters, Arlene O. Matthews (Todd) of Piedmont and Glenda Sanders (Wayne) of Baltimore, Maryland; two sons, Dan Ooten (Susan) of Maryville, Tennessee and Denver Lee Ooten (Jana) of Jacksonville, three step-children, Tannie Highfield (Johnny) and Keith Word (Kathy) all of Piedmont and Secunda "Sam" McGatha; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Word was preceded in death by her late husband, Glen L. Ooten; and two daughters and a son-in-law, Terressia Ann Roberts and her husband Billy and Darlene Ooten.
Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Jamie Doss officiating. Burial followed at Goshen Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Highfield, Jason Miller, Cliff Highfield, Jason Chandler, Jonathon Houck and Tommy Joe Hallman. Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Pace and Pete Pace.
