During the work session at Tuesday night's Piedmont City Council meeting, Mayor Brian Young said he would begin contacting candidates running for the Alabama District 40 House seat in an attempt to schedule a time prior to the next council meeting on Dec. 10 for them to address the citizens.

Candidates running for party nominations will have their primary election Jan. 5, and if required, a runoff will be held Feb. 16. If there is no need for a runoff, the general election will be held Feb. 16. If there is a runoff, the general election will be on March 30th.

The council passed a motion put forward by Councilman Brent Morrison for a one time suspension of the zoning laws pertaining to the placement of mobile homes within the city limits.

The motion was brought about by the request of the Genato family to place a modular home at 407 Johnson Street.

The council made it clear that in the future all such motions would be looked at on a case-by-case basis.

The council made two board appointments during. Keith Hering was appointed to the Public Utility Board and Cory Pike was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board.

Council members discussed aspects of the proposed project "Safe Route to School."

The plan would build new greenways and sidewalks downtown.

Young discussed the addition of drop-off points so children can be dropped off at locations adjacent to the new greenways, allowing them safer travel to school. The next meeting on the project will be held on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. at the central office of the city school system.

In other business:

• The council passed a resolution announcing Nov. 20, 2009 as "$20 on the 20th." The promotion, originated by the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, is designed to boost the local economy by spurring residents to spend money at locally owned businesses.

• The council paid bills totaling $244,924.97.
