This year, the JSU Alumni Association selected Pamela Young as the 2009-2010 Alumna of The Year. Young will be recognized along with four other recipients during halftime at the homecoming game on Saturday.
Young graduated from Jacksonville State in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. During her years there, she was a ballerina and a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, serving as an advisor to the sorority since 1980, and as the National Alumni Regional Area Director during the early 1990s. She has served as National Alumni Association president as well as president of the JSU Gamecock Club. Young was also instrumental in creating the Gamecock Gala event, a yearly senior student athlete banquet.
If all that wasn't enough, she has also served as a member to the J-Club executive board, the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, the Piedmont Athletic Club, the Society of Independent Marketers Association, and as a volunteer for the Cheaha Challenge.
Speaking about Young's' commitment to the university, Alumni Association Administrative assistant Nancy Turner said that she "is working tirelessly behind the scenes to assure the success of an event, project, fund-raising effort, etc. at JSU. She never seeks acclaim and recognition for herself, but only the successful outcome of the effort."
Busy or not, Young makes time for her family, and her hometown Piedmont Bulldogs.
When she's not following her nieces and nephews in various sporting events, she's likely to be found in the stands cheering on her Bulldogs or Gamecocks.
An avid reader, she says she hasn't been able to read as much as she'd like too, but on Friday nights she'll be at her computer.
"I'll be up at one in the morning, reading the newspaper online to see what they're going to say about the game," she said.
Young is the daughter of Millard and Ann Young and helps run the family business — Young Oil, Inc., and Grub Mart Convenience stores. She has two brothers, Vernon and Brian Young.
