The Piedmont Bulldogs head into Thursday's matches at Gaston against Collinsville and Gaston hoping to be healthier.

Illness forced libero Catie Hightower to miss Monday's home match against Oxford, the third starter to miss playing time in the past week.

The Bulldogs were to host Glencoe in a 3-of-5 Area match Tuesday.

"We looked slow and sluggish," said Piedmont coach Grace Strott after Oxford defeated Piedmont 25-13, 25-21, 25-12. "That was my main goal, to get quicker, and we did by the end of the match."

Janissa McKinney had three kills against the Yellow Jackets. Brea Dixon recorded two kills and three digs. Kayla Allen had two service aces and Hilarie Hincy five assists and an ace.

"You can tell we took the weekend off," Strott said in summary.

Saturday brings Piedmont's second tournament of the season. The Bulldogs travel to Oxford. Other schools in Piedmont's pool are Oxford, Saks and White Plains. The second pool includes Alexandria, Donoho, Homewood and Lincoln.

"I'm looking to get quicker and better defensively," said Strott of her goals for the tournament.

On Tuesday of last week, Piedmont split a tri-match against Ohatchee and Saks, defeating Saks. Saks won the opening game 25-20. Piedmont took the final two games, and the match, 25-13 and 15-9. McKinney had seven kills and BreAnna Thompson six kills to lead the attack against the Wildcats. Jeleca Johnson added three aces to the offense and Hincy 17 assists. Hightower contributed 10 digs to the defense.

Ohatchee downed Piedmont 25-18, 25-10. McKinney, Dixon and Thompson had three kills apiece. Hincy recorded 10 assists and Hightower four digs.

Last Thursday's trip to Alexandria to meet the Valley Cubs and the White Plains was cancelled as Alexandria played at Anniston in football Thursday night. White Plains will now play at Piedmont on Sept. 17 as part of a tri-match with Gaston.
