Piedmont’s Bulldogs were 14-4 overall and 4-1 against Calhoun County opponents at Sunday’s Calhoun County softball tournament seeding meeting. That record earned Piedmont the No. 3 seed for this year’s tournament.
The Bulldogs received a first round bye and will not play on Thursday, the opening day of the tournament.
Weather permitting; the Bulldogs will take the field for their first game Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Three-time defending champion Alexandria (20-4, 3-0) received the No. 1 seed. Saks (11-4, 8-1) is seeded No. 2 although Saks coach Randy Law said after the seeding meeting he felt Piedmont could have been the No. 2 seed.
Rain Sunday night and Monday morning forced an early schedule change for the Bulldogs.
Piedmont’s 2A, Area 12 game at White Plains was scratched Monday and will be played today.
The game between Piedmont and Ragland scheduled for today at Ragland was canceled, making way for the Area 12 game.
The Bulldogs won two of the three games they were able to play last week.
Piedmont opened the week with a 6-3 win over Ragland. The Bulldogs led the whole game – scoring twice in the third, twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Miranda Givens limited Ragland to two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Givens went the whole seven innings. She gave up eight hits, walked three and struck out six.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the third when Brooke Dixon doubled home Brittany Strott and Kylea Cook for the game’s first two runs. Piedmont added two runs in the fourth inning when Givens and Strott scored on a double by Brittany Hanvey.
Freshman Catie Hightower had a two-run single in the sixth. Strott and Hanvey were the only Bulldogs with two hits.
Tuesday Piedmont split a doubleheader. In Piedmont’s opener, Cherokee County pitcher Lauren Millsaps scattered four hits and blanked the Bulldogs 4-0.
Piedmont coach Matt Deerman described Millsaps as “the best pitcher we’ve faced.” The Bulldogs did not advance a runner past second base.
Piedmont defeated Ranburne 1-0 in the second game.
The game was scoreless until the fifth. Strott singled and was safe at second when she beat a throw on a fielder’s choice attempt. Cook’s single loaded the bases.
Heather Cain nubbed a ground ball between catcher and pitcher and Strott beat the throw home.
Givens was the winner. She gave up two hits and walked two in seven innings and had eight strikeouts.
Piedmont’s schedule game at Jacksonville on Friday was rained out.
The Bulldogs were to play at White Plains yesterday and will travel to Ragland today.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, Piedmont hosts its third annual spring break tournament at Woodland Park in Anniston.
