Rain doesn’t stop opening day

Piedmont’s baseball and softball players could have sung “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” on opening day last Saturday.

Rain forced Parks and Recreation Department leaders to cancel the opening ceremonies that had included a Boy Scout troop presentation of the colors and a local veteran tossing out the first pitch.

But despite a two-hour delay and a lot of work to make the fields playable, some games did get completed.

Parks and Recreation director Jeff Formby said rain has rarely stopped opening day. Only six of the 16 scheduled games were played on Saturday.

Even with the soggy fields and the small puddles in the stands, Formby said parents and their children still had a good day.

“They were disappointed we didn’t get to play them all, but we’ll get around to it again later,” Formby said. “They were glad we got to play as many as we did.”
