Panthers fall to tourney champs
In the often-delayed Cherokee County baseball tournament, Spring Garden fell to host school Cedar Bluff 5-4 Thursday. After an off day Friday, the Panther defeated Gaylesville 16-4 and lost to tournament champion Cherokee County 14-4 Saturday.

Piedmont looks to first area counter
After splitting a pair of games in the annual Calhoun County baseball tournament, Piedmont returns to the diamond Thursday at home for a doubleheader against Sand Rock. The Bulldogs play their first Class 3A, Area 10 games Friday and Saturday against Weaver. Friday’s game will be at Piedmont and will start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Bulldogs and Bearcats will play a doubleheader at Weaver with the first game set for 10 a.m.

After rain, snow and temperatures in the 30’s forced postponement of Tuesday’s games, the Cherokee County baseball tournament will try to get back on schedule tonight. Spring Garden plays host Cedar Bluff at 4 p.m. Cherokee County and Gaylesville follow at about 6 p.m. Both games were initially scheduled for Tuesday in the tournament’s round robin format.

What was supposed to have been Piedmont’s first softball game of the 2010 season, a home contest with Cherokee County, fell victim to Monday night’s rain and Tuesday morning’s snow. Coach Matt Deerman stopped at the softball field Tuesday morning before arriving at school and deemed it unplayable.

Piedmont is the No. 5 seed for this year’s Calhoun County baseball tournament, continuing a steady improvement in bracket position for the Bulldogs. In 2007, Piedmont was the No. 11 seed. In 2008, the coaches tabbed the Bulldogs at No. 8 and last year’s team was No. 7.

Two years of frustration and disappointment ended for the Piedmont Bulldogs Saturday. The final score of the 2010 Class 3A Northeast Regional boys championship game was Piedmont 56, Leeds 40. After losing in the regional championship game in 2008 and 2009, the Bulldogs, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association poll, earned a place in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s version of the NCAA Final Four, the Final 48.
Piedmont baseball team itching to play

Monday was a doubly difficult day for James Blanchard and his Piedmont baseball team. The scheduled doubleheader with Cherokee County was canceled, not once but twice. The two games were initially set for Piedmont. When Blanchard called Cherokee County coach Jim Garmany around 11 a.m. to tell him it was too wet to play in Piedmont, Garmany suggested playing in Centre and Blanchard accepted. Then, just before the Piedmont players boarded the bus to head to Centre, Garmany called and said the Cherokee County field was also too wet to play. “We went inside and practiced. Everybody was kind of bummed though. Everybody wanted to play,” Blanchard said.
