It takes two miles to reach Germania Springs from Jacksonville Highway 204. The spring was called Walnut Springs when Colonel Benjamin Hollingsworth from Tennessee settled two miles north of the county seat of Benton. The name Benton was later changed to Jacksonville, Alabama.

There is no doubt this has been one of the hottest summers in a very long time. But just a few weeks ago all the Piedmont Housing Authority families had the chance to cool off at the Clyde H. Pike Civic Center swimming pool.

Seniors and juniors and their parents are asked to attend a meeting at the school cafeteria on Sept. 7 at 5:30p.m. There will be a short presentation followed by a trip to homerooms to complete paperwork.

Mayce Hardin recently met with Governor Bob Riley as the reigning Little Miss Alabama. She had the opportunity to talk with him about concerns and questions children of her age have as students and Alabama citizens. She also learned about Mr. Riley’s role and responsibilities as Governor. She explored government buildings, and met and talked with many state officials.

On August 7, 2010, in conjunction with the annual Stephens Family Reunion, the Capt. W. Y. C. Hannum Chapter 1881 United Daughters of the Confederacy Maryville, TN, assisted by the Savage Stewart Camp 522, Piedmont, AL and the Capt. John Rayburn Camp 452 Marshall County, AL Sons of the Confederate Veterans presented a Confederate Grave Marker Dedication Ceremony to commemorate the life and service of Confederate Veteran Elijah Bluford Stephens, 5th Sgt. Alabama Cavalry Co. A Hollinsworth’s Battalion. The event took place at the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Bluffton, Cherokee County, AL.

On July 10, Jacob McCurdy placed first in the Lead Line class at the Gainesville, Ga., Horse Show. He was riding his sister’s horse, Marker. Hannah McCurdy placed first in the Juvenile Pony class on her horse, The Skywish.

This summer two students were chosen to represent Spring Garden High School at the 2010 session of Alabama Girls State and Alabama Boys State. Hannah Westbrook attend Girls State at Troy University and Daniel Rogers attended Boys State at the University if Alabama.
