Letter to the editor: Let’s support our police

04-22-2008

Shame on you Mr. Mayor! As the wife of a retired homicide Investigator, and the mother of an active duty police officer, it is my opinion that you should hang your head in shame for catering to the self-obsessed and woefully uninformed who use ‘the taxpayers money’ as a justification for anything they personally don’t like.

The same people who demand off-duty officers use their personal vehicles to work off-duty jobs are the identical people who regularly vote down any sort of extra compensation and/or pay raises for police officers. Yet, they are the very first to scream the loudest when in need of police assistance. If this city, or any other city for that matter, paid police officers a living wage off-duty jobs wouldn’t be necessary.

Don’t these individuals realize that, the very presence of a police vehicle, where ever it is located, is a crime deterrent? Additionally, a police officer even off-duty will respond automatically if he sees a crime taking place. They’re cops, that’s what they do, they look for violent people breaking the law.

In closing I’d like to quote my husband who has always said, “Cops don’t get paid for what they do, they get paid for what they MIGHT have to do”. Let the self-serving tax-obsessed think about that one.
