Sgt. Bertles receives Bronze Star

Staff Sgt. Matthew C. Bertles was recently awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan. Bertles served honorably as the platoon armor, supply sergeant, and a 3rd Squad leader of 3rd Platoon while in Afghanistan.

As the senior squad leader for 3rd Platoon, used his tactical knowledge not only to maneuver his squad into battle but took responsibility in leading 3rd Platoon, MEDVAC situations. During the absence of the platoon sergeant, Sgt. Bertles took charge in MEDVAC injured personnel in the battle field which included ISAF/US forces and Afghan National Soldiers attached to the 3rd Platoon.

As the 3rd Platoon Armor, Sgt. Bertles played a critical role in the management and structural improvement of the operation base’s Mounted Weapons. He was also able to establish and build a well organized arms room for future platoons to use at the operation base. His knowledge in weaponry has kept all weapons placed in his charge combat effective during 3rd Platoon’s 30 combat engagements.

He has demonstrated mentorship and tactical knowledge that has allowed his squad to conduct operations throughout the Zabul Province, promoting security, governmental presence and a more stable life to the people of Argehendab District. During every contact with the Anti-Coalition Forces, Sgt. Bertles demonstrated immense valor in successfully leading ISAF/US forces during intense battles.

Sgt. Bertles assisted in leading and successfully escorting two convoys of civilian vehicles carrying critical supplies for other bases. His biggest contribution to the platoon was his fearless leadership on the battlefield. He participated in over 30 mounted and dismounted combat patrols engaging the enemy on 15 of these.

Sgt. Bertles has been involved in many direct fire engagements in where he has led his men with the poise and a unique ability to multi-task. He assisted in controlling indirect fire assets, providing tactical terminal control of close air support, and maneuvering his ground forces to defeat enemy threats.

As described by his higher in command, “Sgt. Bertles is a perfect example of non-commissioned officer of tactical mentorship and fearless leadership in the Global War on Terrorism.”

Sgt. Bertles was also awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded while serving in Iraq.

He is a 2001 graduate of Cedartown (Ga.) High School and is the son of Randy and Sherry Bertles and brother of Dakota Bertles of Cedartown. He is the grandson of Margaret Spears of Piedmont. He is currently stationed in Hohensfel, Germany, with his wife Sarah (Antill) and sons Cohen and Connor Bertles.
