Thyra Smith: First trade day at center was successful

06-24-2008

The first trade day at the Nances Creek Community Center was a great success. There were 10 or 12 sellers and a number of buyers.

Everything from vegetables to candles, honey, peanuts clothes and flowers was for sale.

There was also a good turnout for the singing Saturday afternoon. Tickets were drawn for gifts that were given away.

The Community Center was organized in 1981.

Officers elected were Charlotte Ponder, president; Thyra Smith, vice president; Linda Jones, secretary and Edith Poland, treasurer. Linda Jones holds the offices of secretary and treasurer right now.

Of course the biggest problem was getting enough money to pay for the land.

By 1982 there were fewer people to help raise the money.

We gathered at Aaron and Charlotte Ponder’s place of business for our meetings. Our by-laws and regulations were adopted. We then spent many days and hours raising money to pay Wayne and Alice Young for the land, which was around six acres. We sold barbecue plates, dressing meals with all the trimmings, fish fries, ice cream and other food. People gave donations toward big projects. We then had a deadline for the money to pay these people off. We then borrowed money from the Poland family and then later raised money to pay them back.

We have certainly been blessed. We have a place for our children to play, a place for family reunions, singing and other events.

We want to thank everyone who has made this possible. We want to thank County Commissioner Rudy Abbott for his hard work and Rep. Lea Fite for the barbecue he has donated. We do not owe anything.

There have been other officials and other people who have helped us. We couldn’t name the center after everyone who has helped. Tommy Poland died in 2005. We are sorry he had to leave us and his family, but we are thankful to name the ball field after Tommy.

We ask that you must get in touch with Linda Jones for use of the pavilion at 447-7039 because we have had several bookings at the same time. There are absolutely no alcohol or drugs allowed.
