Deadline for entries
Plans are underway for the 6th Annual Freedom Celebration set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Clyde Pike Civic Center, sponsored by the City of Piedmont. The city pool will be open starting at 11 a.m., free to the public.
There will be free food and drinks all day along with a veteran’s tribute and entertainment including Kelli Johnson of Jacksonville and Kneckdown of Rome, Ga.
There will be moonwalks, a water slide, trackless train, bucket truck rides, Army National Guard climbing wall and other events during the day.

Borden reunion
The Descendants of four Borden brothers — Eli, Joel, John and James Hawkins Borden — who settled in Alabama in the early 1800s, will gather at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Anniston Meeting Center for the fifth Borden reunion to be held in Alabama. The Eli/John descendants will go to Borden Springs on Friday, June 20, to visit the John A. Borden family cemetery and the Eli Borden family cemetery. They will meet in the Piedmont First Baptist Church parking lot at 10 a.m. to begin the trip.
The Joel descendants will meet at 10 a.m. Friday at Janney Iron Furnace to visit the Civil War memorial. Morris Penny will tell about the Joel Borden descendants who served in the Civil War. A catered lunch will be served at the park. A group from the southern end of the county will leave from Baymont Inn at 9 a.m. and another group from the northern end of the county will leave from Nance’s Creek Baptist Church parking lot at 9 a.m. and Weaver First Baptist Church parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome. Anyone needing directions to Janney Furnace Park is invited to join either group.
Everyone will gather at 6 p.m. Friday at the Anniston Meeting Center for a casual meal and to prepare for the Saturday morning gathering.
Dailey Street VBS
Dailey Street Baptist Church will kick-off Vacation Bible School at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21. The theme is “Power Lab: Discovering Jesus‚ Miraculous Power.” It will continue from 6-8:30 p.m. Monday, June 23, through Friday, June 27. There will be classes for ages 4 to adult. Commencement will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 29.
Spring Garden barbecue
The Spring Garden Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual barbecue in the school lunchroom from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 21
Nances Creek events
Trade Day and a farmers market will be at Nances Creek Community Center beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 21. There will be arts, crafts, home grown vegetables and local honey. Nances Creek bluegrass

Public health open house
The Calhoun County Health Department, 3400 McClellan Blvd., Anniston (next to the Top O’ the River) will have public health open house from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. Health programs will be on display and program experts will be on hand to answer questions. Those attending will learn about subjects including the AllKids Child Health insurance program, family planning/pregnancy prevention, and home health programs.
Seniors trip
The Piedmont Senior Citizen group will go to Charleston, S. C. Sept. 18-21. Packages can be picked up at the Civic Center or contact Ed Spoon at 447-6258 or Aggie Harbour at 447-9804. Seniors can eat at Poogans Porch, Charleston Crab House and Hymans Seafood Restaurant. Also featured are a tour of the city, a carriage ride, a visit to the Market Place, and a visit to the Magnolia Plantation.
FCE trips

New Orleans trip
A senior citizen trip to New Orleans on Aug. 30 and 31 and Sept. 1 has been arranged by the Oxford Civic Center. The cost is $325 per person (double occupancy) and includes motorcoach transportation, two nights and three days at Hilton Riverside Resort Hotel and two full breakfast buffets. The hotel is located next to the trolley station, which goes to Bourbon Street, the French Quarter and the market. Space is limited. Call Pam Harris at 831-2660 to sign up.

‘The Foreigner’ at JSU
“The Foreigner” by Larry Shue will performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 19-21, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at Stone Performing Center, Jacksonville State University.
In this inspired comic romp, “Froggy” LeSeuer brings a shy young friend named Charlie to a fishing lodge in rural Georgia. Charlie is terrified of making conversation with strangers, so, to save him some heartache, Froggy tells his other companions that Charlie doesn’t speak English. When Froggy leaves, the other fishers begin to openly discuss some damaging revelations, assuming Charlie doesn’t understand a word.
