HISTORY

25 years ago in Piedmont

04-08-2008

April 6, 1983

The Sunshine Club of First Baptist Church met March 30 in Whitley Hall. This meeting was one week early from the regular April meeting to have Easter festivities.

Fain Love, president, called the meeting to order. Woodrow Johnson led the opening prayer. Jimmy Haines led the group in singing “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus.”

Irene Kirk was in charge of the devotion. Her subject was “Resurrection and Life.” Scripture was Luke 24:1-7, read by Jimmy Haines. Brother Calvert closed the period with prayer. Helen Hollingsworth read minutes of the last meeting, which were approved.

Discussions were held on the group leaving April 12 for a day at Shocco Springs to attend Senior Adult Retreat.

Edna West, social activities director, was in charge of the social hour.

The tables were decorated with hand-fashioned baskets with lace and ribbons filled with Easter candies made by Lillian Sing.

Candles in the shape of Easter eggs were on all the tables.

Those to have April birthdays are Volyner Putman and Stuart Calvert.

A humorous feature of the day was modeling of the Easter hats. The men wore the ladies’ hat and paraded around to the tune of “The Easter Parade” played by Florence Atkinson on the piano. Winners were as follows: Sweetest – M.B. Brown; Prettiest – Volyner Putman; Funniest – Ezra Gunter. Prizes awarded were Easter candles.

“Peter Cottontail” (Mary Love) hopped around with a large basket filled with plastic eggs and gave everyone an egg and in turn, they opened and read the paper inside. The papers were hilarious.

To top off these festivities, an Easter egg hunt followed with the following winning prizes for finding the most eggs: First prize – Hazel Gunter; Second Prize – Helen Hollingsworth. Betty Lively was a welcomed visitor who helped with some of the entertainment.

Brother Calvert returned thanks and a most delicious meal was enjoyed by 32 members and one visitor.
